60 year anniversary of Surtsey November 14th in Eldheimar


The Environment Agency (Umhverfisstofnun) and Vestmannaeyjabær commemorate Surtseyjar's 60th anniversary with an event on Tuesday, November 14 at 17:00 in Eldheimar.


Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate and Íris Róbertsdóttir, mayor of Vestmannaeyjar, will address the guests and open the event.


Inga Dóra Hrólfsdóttir, director of nature conservation at the Environment Agency, delivers a speech about the conservation value of Surtseyjar.


Borgthór Magnússon, ecologist and former expedition leader in Surtsey, tells us stories about the annual trips to Surtsey.


Golla's photography exhibition at Iceland Review of nature in Surtsey and scientists at work on the island will be officially opened.


Artist Þorgerður Ólafsdóttir's newly published work about Surtsey Essyja will be for sale. In the book, Þorgerður weaves together works of art, travel stories and texts that discuss the history of Surtsey for 60 years.


The National Television program will be streamed from the show Landinn, but they went on an annual scientific expedition to Surtsey this summer.


Light refreshments will be served.
